I DO Give a Flying Fuck. Second Part of Chapter IV.

As Bloom watched, June appeared to be picking up the pace. Irma and Hay Lin were going up and down faster now, but still the movement was absolutely smooth, no sign of stress at all. Hay Lin was bouncing a little, lifting off Irma’s shoulders slightly at the top of the stroke. Irma was grimacing slightly as Hay Lin landed on her at the bottom. “Those aren’t batons,” Timmy said. “They look like flares.”

What happened next took everyone completely by surprise. June lowered her arms again and crouched, the Guardians still balancing on her hands.

Then with a lightning movement, she leaped up, throwing her arms up again almost too fast to see, and flung both Guardians into the sky. Stunned, Bloom looked up and saw the two girls receding at high speed, disappearing into the darkness as they got farther away from the fire. Suddenly two bright points of light appeared. The flares. Everyone kept their eyes on the lights until Hay Lin and Irma came down again under their own power.

There was a murmur of amazement amongst the viewers as they again landed on June’s outstretch palms.

“I want everyone to understand,” Irma said. “We did not use our wings on the takeoff. It was all June. We didn’t start flying until we reached the top and were coming back down. ”

“How high did you go?” Sky asked.

“In the dark, I’m not sure. I’m guessing about 40 feet.”

“Holy fuck!”

“Yeah. June, turn us around for the next shot. Then they can see our wings for themselves.”

June turned around, slowly so that the Guardians would not lose their balance, Then she threw the girls upward again at the same velocity. Everyone had seen that the wings were motionless that time. Again Irma and Hay Lin were way up there and could be seen only by the flares.

Bloom exchanged glances with Timmy. “Son of a bitch!”

Irma and Hay Lin descended again. This time Irma landed and only Hay Lin touched down on June’s palm.

Jesus, Bloom thought, this reminds me of those rich guys with the hunting falcons. All June needs is a big glove and a hood to put on Hay Lin’s head. She shook the crazy image out of her head.
