Medaka Box (Japanese: めだかボックス Hepburn: Medaka Bokkusu) is a Japanese shōnen manga written by Nisio Isin and illustrated by Akira Akatsuki. The series follows the student council, originally Medaka Kurokami and Zenkichi Hitoyoshi, during their various adventures to honor suggestions, presented by academy members, in order to better the academy.
At her first year in Hakoniwa Academy, Medaka Kurokami is elected Student Council President and institutes a suggestion box, dubbed the "Medaka Box" for her fellow academy students to make suggestions and requests. Together with her childhood friend Zenkichi Hitoyoshi, Medaka is determined to address any kind of request by the students, from finding lost dogs to cleaning up club buildings and even fixing personalities. During the course of the series, Kouki Akune and Mogana Kikaijima are also recruited by Medaka to become part of the Student Council. Later in the series, the Student Council discovers the existence of the Flask Plan, supervised by the Hakoniwa Academy Chairman in order to experiment on students with supernatural abilities, dubbed as "Abnormals". The goal of the project is to find a way to mass produce Abnormal beings. However, once a method is found, the students of Hakoniwa Academy will be forced to endure the vicious tests which may result in the death of most of the students. After battling many foes, the Student Council are able to put a stop to the Flask Plan. However, the results of their success are short-lived with the immediate introduction of Misogi Kumagawa, a teenage boy with a powerful abnormality. Using a school rule, he threatens to overthrow Medaka and assume control of the Student Council. After the defeat of Kumagawa, two students who were sealed by Kumagawa's abilities are able to complete their transfer to Hakoniwa Academy. The two students contain multiple Abnormal powers and are called "Not Equals". They are intent on reviving the Flask Plan once Medaka graduates. Medaka and her Student Council, now with Kumagawa in its rankings, attempt to stop the project's revival by training five middle school students to be their successors; however the five are secretly aligned with the Not Equals. When the five students begin to admire and respect Medaka, Anshin'in (the leader of the Not Equals) reveals her true intentions: to isolate Zenkichi from Medaka and put them against each other, arranging for him to overthrow her and allow the Flask Plan to proceed. After convincing the students that they should start dealing with their own issues themselves instead of just relying on Medaka, Zenkichi manages to defeat her in the elections and succeeds her as president. Before stepping down, Medaka declares that the Flask Plan is allowed to continue, but with special precautions to ensure the safety of the other students. Relieved from her duties ahead of the Student Council, Medaka enjoys her days as a normal student until she is informed about the start of the "Jet Black Wedding Feast", a battle royale between representatives of the seven branch families of the Kurokami Clan for the right to become Medaka's husband and the successor to the main family. By having one of the contestants to relenquish his invitation to her, Medaka joins the competition determined to defeat all other suitors and earn the right to keep living her life freely. Upon learning of her situation, Zenkichi and the new student council assembled by him start looking for her. As the suitors are eliminated from the Feast, they stay behind to confront the student council, trying to prevent Zenkichi from reuniting with Medaka.
